Having braces can make it difficult to keep your teeth clean. Here is a few things to keep in mind in keeping your teeth healthy while you have braces.
PLAQUE – If you don’t have braces it’s easier to reach plaque but if you do wear braces there is more places that food particles can lodge themselves and get trapped. Electric toothbrushes are a good option if you have braces as they are gentle and effective around braces.
GUMS – If you do use an electric toothbrush its best to have the setting on sensitive mode. This mode is much better for your gum line and around the brackets and wires as it brushes at a lower speed.
BRUSHING AND FLOSSING
- Remove plastic bands.
- Clean braces carefully(wires and pins)
- Brush each wire both upper and lower, up and down.
- Brush your teeth for two minutes twice daily, thoroughly cleaning each tooth.
- Floss once a day. It’s best to use waxed floss that you can thread like Super Floss. Carefully thread under the main wire. Do not snap floss just gently move up and down, remove then move on to the next tooth.
RINSE – Rinse thoroughly then have a good look to see if any food particles remain.
CHECK-UPS – Seeing your Orthodontist regularly is a good option as they can check for any adjustments and do any repairs if needed as well as check the health of your teeth and gums.
