Children’s Dental Care

Dentist and child laughingThe health of your child’s smile today impacts the integrity of their teeth as an adult. Parents play a crucial role in helping their child form good oral hygiene habits, access preventative dental care and develop balanced dietary choices that impact their child’s oral health. As your Gosnells children’s dentistry provider, we work closely with you and your family to set each child up for success.

Your Child’s First Checkup

Early checkups help familiarise children with the dental office experience. By focusing on preventative care, your child can enjoy a lower risk of toothaches, dental emergencies or decay. That way, the overall care experience is as positive and comfortable as possible.

We recommend bringing children in for their first dental visit by
age 2. At this appointment, we typically keep it low key, playing with the dental mirror and talking about their diet and oral hygiene. As kids become more comfortable at future visits, we can move on to cleans and X-rays as needed.

More Than Just Teeth

The development of a child’s smile plays a vital role in their speech, eating habits and self-confidence. Extended habits such as thumb sucking or premature tooth loss can lead to long-term changes in their oral function and tooth alignment. We work closely with you and your child to intercept issues while they’re preventable and easily corrected, to reduce extensive therapies later down the road.

Dental sealants are protective coatings that prevent bacteria and food debris from settling into the deep pits and fissures of back teeth. The smoother, shallower surface is thus easier to clean with a toothbrush, limiting the risk of getting cavities.

Sealants take only a few minutes to place and no numbing is required. We recommend them for newly-erupted adult molars, which typically come in around the ages of 6 and 12, respectively.

Our family dentist works closely with local pedodontists (children’s dentistry specialists) for situations involving complex care. Should your child require major treatment outside of basic fillings, we’ll arrange for them to see a specialist.

Brushing and flossing can only go so far when it comes to preventing dental decay. By working closely with parents to identify nutritional risks, habits and snack choices, we can help families eliminate hidden sugar from their children’s diets. We work closely to educate parents on nutritional risks that — although seemingly healthy — may put their children at an increased chance of cavities.

Proper brushing and flossing start with selecting the best toothbrush and toothpaste for the child. Thorough brushing twice a day, along with daily flossing, are important steps in plaque removal and caries prevention. Our family dentist recommends using an electric toothbrush for increased efficacy. Children typically enjoy using powered brushes because they seem more like a toy, but they’re also better for plaque removal.
