Dental Veneers

Woman smilingFor a dramatic smile transformation, dental veneers offer almost instant results. As part of your smile design process, we’ll discuss what you want to change about your teeth and the ideal appearance you’re looking for. It could be issues such as crooked or misshaped teeth.

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain — or composite — that cover the front of your visible teeth. Placing them side-by-side helps to transform the overall look of your smile and only takes a couple of visits.

Who Should Consider Veneers?

We recommend cosmetic veneers for individuals who may be unhappy with or embarrassed by their teeth. A veneer can specifically address issues like

  • Crowding
  • Discolouration
  • Uneven teeth
  • Gaps
  • Irregular tooth size

Unlike crowns or fillings, veneers do not serve a functional or restorative purpose. Rather, they’re simply cosmetic. If you have a broken tooth or cavity, a crown would be more appropriate.

Our office offers both porcelain and composite veneer designs. Composite veneers are created chairside and shaped by hand in one appointment. Porcelain veneers are designed in a lab and are most appropriate for multiple teeth, because they’re more durable and translucent (for a natural appearance).

Dental veneers are aesthetic restorations that we bond to the front of your teeth. When applied, they immediately change what’s visible when you smile. Depending on your unique characteristics, you might need anywhere from 6-10 veneers across your upper front teeth. Some people prefer to get fewer veneers to cover specific teeth that detract from their overall smile.

Your dental veneers treatment starts with a smile design consultation. During this visit, we’ll discuss what goals and needs you have for your smile and what you want to change. From there, we’ll talk about the different options available and what type of outcome to expect. If you’re ready to move forward, we’ll create a care plan that outlines the visits and costs involved, then get you scheduled to start treatment.

For composite veneers, the process requires a 90-minute appointment. We’ll prep your teeth then hand-shape the material colour of your choice to each one. When complete, you’ll have an instantly new smile.

Traditional porcelain veneers require two appointments. The first visit is approximately two hours long, where we prep the teeth and take an impression. The moulds are sent to our lab, where each veneer is designed. About two weeks later, you’ll return to have the permanent veneers bonded in place.

It’s vital to keep your veneers clean so that bacteria and stain don’t accumulate around the edges or cause decay to seep underneath. Floss your veneers daily (it will not pull them off). Also, take care not to bite too hard into tough or firm foods, as the veneer could potentially chip. If you tend to grind your teeth, it’s best to wear a nightguard while you sleep.
